Data is at the heart of Space Intelligence. We process large volumes of satellite data and analyse it within a machine learning framework to produce valuable nature mapping products for our clients.
Our products are trusted by the developers and investors in nature-based solutions, including Apple, Climate Asset Management, Everland, and WCS. They are also used to support the validation of compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) through our partnership with ICE’s Commodity Traceability Service (COT).

Role Overview
The key focus of this role is to provide the testing and training data used to produce and assess the quality of/improve our maps, through the manual analysis of high resolution satellite data, other geospatial layers, and the published and grey literature.
You will be part of a “Map quality & ecology” pod (small expert team), and work a lot of your time within small interdisciplinary science teams in a fast-paced environment. This role reports to Dr Thom Brade.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Work as part of a team (pod) to provide
- Create high quality sampling polygons and points for developing and testing our landcover maps through expert knowledge gained through research, discussion with our ecologists and other experts in our team or in country, and analysis of high resolution satellite data and other geospatial data sources using QGIS.
- Review draft maps of land cover and carbon produced by Space Intelligence for errors or problems
Profile/Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Geography, Environmental Science or related discipline, with a 2:1 or higher, or equivalent work experience

- An understanding of applied ecology, particularly in the tropics

Essential Skills
- Experience with GIS software (e.g. QGIS)
- Comfortable using Google Suite software (Gmail, Calendar, GDocs, Gsheets etc)
- Knowledge of or analysis experience with datasets pertaining to forest ecosystems and/or the vegetation, for example having done landcover classification work during degree, or having spent time looking at natural ecosystems using Google Earth.
General background and interests
- Interest in the creation of data and methodologies which assist in the protection and restoration of global forest resource.
- Interest in nature, biodiversity, and deforestation. Loving watching nature documentaries is a good sign of aptitude for this job!
Salary
This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week), attracting a salary of £12 per hour.

Where will I work?
We are looking for a candidate who will be based in our office on George Street, Edinburgh. Most of our team are in the office most days, and we feel you will learn fastest if you are in the office most days too. However, we support hybrid working and would be happy for you to work 1-2 days a week from home.
