Global Screening Data

Consistent, analysis-ready suite of 30m resolution maps covering land cover, historical deforestation, and aboveground forest carbon storage.

Global Harmonised Layers (GHL) is a screening-grade suite of 30m maps covering land cover, deforestation, and aboveground forest carbon. It combines the strengths of 18 open datasets, harmonised onto one grid and a common target year. The layers are thematically consistent: only forest classes carry carbon above zero, and recently cleared land is never mapped as forest.

GHL powers NbS Project Screening – our platform for project developers and offtakers designed to rapidly assess project eligibility and carbon impact.

Know where GHL fits

Built for orientation and screening across landscapes.

Built for this

  • Place nature-based solutions projects (REDD+, ARR, IFM, agriculture) in their wider landscape
  • Confirm broad land cover and carbon storage across a project area
  • Find sites for new projects
  • Track deforestation rates and trends at district or regional scale

Not built for this

  • Precise carbon figures to check against issued carbon credits
  • Exact forest area to match project documents — GHL doesn’t follow country- or project-specific forest definitions
  • Building alternative baselines to a project’s own — e.g. testing for over-crediting in REDD+
